Let the user select from options

Get dynamic dropdown options, enable autocomplete (search), and let the user add options

The dropdown block lets the user select from a list of options in a dropdown.

This article covers the many ways you can customize the dropdown block, including:

  • Defining options manually or dynamically, from a table source

  • Enabling autocomplete mode for search-like functionality

  • Letting the user select from options (e.g. names) that output corresponding values (e.g. user IDs)

  • Letting the user add their own new options

Add options manually or dynamically, from a table source

If there is a fixed set of options that the user will choose from, you can add them manually in the dropdown setup panel under "Options", like this:

The second way to setup the dropdown options is to insert a table from a previous step. There are a few reasons to do this, including:

  • If the list of options is dynamic

  • If the list of options is very long and is stored in another app (e.g. a spreadsheet)

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Before the interface step, get a table using an action like Get all rows of a worksheet or Get a column from a worksheet

  2. In the dropdown setup panel under "Options", select Table and insert the table as the source

  3. Choose the column from the table with the options you want the user to see

Searching through options using autocomplete

If the user will see many dropdown options, turn on Autocomplete mode under "Controls" in the setup panel. Autocomplete mode gives the dropdown block search-like functionality, letting the user type into the dropdown and showing them results that contain what they type.

Show the users options that output corresponding values (Option-value mode)

Often, it's useful to show the user a list of options but to have the output data of their selection be a corresponding value. For example…

  • The user chooses from a list of event invitee names but their selection outputs an email address

  • The user chooses from a list of workspace users' names but their selection outputs a user ID

To enable this functionality, turn on Option-Value mode under "Options".

If you've added options manually, add output values for the options you created:

If you've added options from a table source, choose a column of options from the table and a column of values:
